A classic against torture and the death penalty, for proportionate punishments set by law.
My review
I understand the historical importance of this book, but reading it today felt like reading an argument that has already won. And in a way, that is the highest praise you can give it. I found the idea that the certainty of punishment deters more than its severity interesting. My mother gave it to me along with the other two law books, and I read it more out of consideration than interest.
